Research areas are computers as a medium, digital media in sustainability higher education, digital media and sustainable development, e-learning, the tool metaphor in computer science, computer-based material flow analysis and life-cycle assessment (in particular material flow networks), continuous simulation, discrete event simulation, geographical information systems (GIS).

Environmental management information systems (EMIS) decribe an important important research area: corporate material flow analysis, efficiency engineering, life-cycle assessment etc. Current research: dynamic material flow analysis and chemical engineering, loops and steady states, monte carlo simulation, in particular in combination with continuous simulation, integration of material flow analysis into corporate information systems etc.
